This is a documentary of Koi farmers in Yamakoshi.
The rice paddies overflow with water from the freshly melted snow,
as do the wild ponds in which nishikigoi are raised.

It's when the koi are released into the ponds.
Shintarou Koi Farm has been raising nishikigoi for fifty years.
Even in summer, they'll feed them and check water quality every day.
"They'll also have busy days hatching and choosing from the young fish.
Yet it is fall they look forward to.
What people want from nishikigoi is to watch them slowly swimming around.
So the bigger they are, the more fun it is to watch them swimming through
a pond. Also making their bodies bigger makes their colors more vivid.

A heartwarming documentary to show how people connect the hearts between rural and urban.
Tokachi, eastern Hokkaido, is known as Japan’s largest farming area producing wealthy agricultural, dairy, and husbandry items. In this decade, farmers in Tokachi have been hosting more than 20,000 high school students from all over Japan. Students stay a few days to challenge dairy and husbandry works. This “farm-stay” project has nurtured the connection of people’s hearts, and brought urban residents chances to admit the possibilities that rural holds. Young urban fellows spend a few days at farms, start having relation with rural, then they recognize Hokkaido as their second homes.
The program shows how they are impressed by the rural life, as well as what they do to contribute to Hokkaido when they grow up. Viewers will also be amazed by the fascinating pictures and sceneries of Hokkaido.

We follow the story of one boy doing his best in the field of cheerleading, a competitive sport with a strong feminine image, and one boy trying his hardest to keep up. Out of a group of 35, he is the only male student. He says "At first, it was really hard..." so why did he join the cheer team? What was it that drew him in? Narita Koi Farms raises and sells Nishikigoi (carp), or so-called the “swimming jewel”, in Komaki-shi, Aichi Prefecture. Narita Koi Farms is a small company with only seven employees, but has a unique and major characteristic. That is, they "polish（care）" the carp. They purchase young carp from farms in Hiroshima and Niigata, and raise them to become beautiful fishes. The two "Koi-Baka", or “carp freaks”, are the ones behind this effort. One of them is Mr. Narita, the president and the one in charge of purchasing and sales. The other one, Mr. Yamamoto, is the managing director and Narita’s right-hand man, who is in charge of the "polishing/caring" work. The competitive exhibition is where people compete the beauty of their carp. Nishikigoi was born in Japan, and therefore the exhibition is known for its strict and high standards.

Nishi Awakura Village is a small village north of Okayama Prefecture with a population of
about 1,500 people.
The forest occupies 96% of the village’s area, and half of it is made up of HINOKI (cypress).
This village once thrived on forestry, but recently it has been losing it’s vibrancy due to
depopulation and aging.
But recently, a lot of young people have been moving to the village.
One of them is Mr. Masayuki Oshima, who also founded the carpentry workshop
''Mokkoubo-youbi''.
The stylish furniture they produce, made from HINOKI (cypress), is valued both in Japan and
abroad, and the sales keep increasing.
The forests are reborn through forestry, creating richer scenery.
Mr. Oshima calls it "a craft that eventually shapes the landscape".
But suddenly, tragedy struck and the workshop was burnt to the ground during a fire.
How will Mr. Oshima and his team overcome these difficulties?
To find out, we followed the young, passionate carpenter and his team for ten years.

Fukushima Prefecture is continuing promote the medical industry. The medical field is expecting large growth centered on developing nations. The medical industry in Fukushima can have a big impact on the regional economy. The value of Fukushima’s medical equipment market will double over the next 10 years.

Seither sind 5 Jahre vergangen. Die Umgebung des Kernkraftwerks ist nach wie vor
unbewohnbar, aber in anderen Gegenden nehmen die Menschen langsam wieder ihr
gewohntes Leben und ihre wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten wie vor dem Erdbeben auf.
Ein großer Antriebsmotor für den wirtschaftlichen Wiederaufbau ist die
Medizintechnologie und die damit verbundene Kooperation mit Deutschland.
Vorgestellt werden Unternehmen und Manufakturen, die die regionale Wirtschaft
stützen und Arbeitsplätze schaffen. Die Präfektur Fukushima konzentrierte sich auf die
Medizintechnologie, die weltweit Wachstumspotential hat, und förderte die Expansion
von regionalen Unternehmen in dem Bereich der Medizintechnologie.
In der Stadt Kôriyama wurde eine Einrichtung/Forschungskrankenhaus geschaffen,
das weltweit als erstes Krankenhaus BNCT , eine Krebstherapie mit Neutronen, in
klinischen Studien durchführt. BNCT soll auch die Behandlung von rezidivierenden
Krebserkrankungen ermöglichen, gilt als die „ideale Krebstherapie“ („yume no
ganchiryô = ein Traum von einer Krebstherapie“) weltweit. Die Ergebnisse dieser
klinischen Studie werden weltweit mit Spannung erwartet und beobachtet.
Was die Förderung der Medizintechnologie unterstützt ist die in diesem
Zusammenhang entstandene Kooperation mit Deutschland, für Japan das Land von
dem man in puncto Medizin immer schon gerne gelernt hat -in gewissem Sinne sieht
man in Deutschland „die Wiege der Medizin“.
Die Präfektur Fukushima hat 2014 mit dem Land Nordrhein-Westfalen eine
Absichtserklärung für enge Kooperation und gemeinsame Forschung und Entwicklung
in den Bereichen Krebstherapie, Entwicklung von medizinischen Geräten und
medizinischen Robotern vereinbart.
Im September 2016 findet in diesem Zusammenhang an der Universität Essen ein
gemeinsames Symposium der Präfektur Fukushima und dem Land Nordrhein-
Westfalen (NRW-Fukushima Joint Symposium on Advances in Medicin“ statt. BNCT
und Medizinroboter (Strahlentherapie und Robotik) sind die Themen der Konferenz.
Experten der Strahlentherapie aus Japan und von der Universität tauschen sich hier
aus. Die Universität Essen strebt an, Deutschlands erste Einrichtung für
Strahlentherapie zu werden und legt daher großen Wert auf die gemeinsame
Forschung mit dem Krankenhaus in der Präfektur Fukushima.
Bei der Medizin-Messe MEDICA, die am 13. November 2016 in Düsseldorf stattfindet,
stellt die Präfektur Fukushima jedes Jahr aus. Auch in diesem Jahr stellen 6
Unternehmen aus der Präfektur Fukushima ihre neuen Produkte vor. Darunter auch
das Unternehmen ESQ - eine kleine Fabrik (Werkstatt) mit nur 20 Mitarbeitern. Dieses
Unternehmen ist weltweit an der Spitze, was die Produktion von ultrafeinen
Metallröhren angeht. Auch für den deutschen Automobilzulieferer Bosch hat man hier
bereits ultrafeine Metallröhren für die Antiblockier-Bremssysteme gefertigt. Ultrafeine
Röhren von ESQ werden in Stents verwendet, die Herzinfarktpatienten eingesetzt
werden, um verengte Herzkranzgefäße zu erweitern. ESQ beliefert Stent-Hersteller
weltweit.
Die Firma Cyberdyne, die ihre Produktion in der Präfektur Fukushima hat, stellt den
medizinischen Roboteranzug(Exoscelett) HAL her, der in der Rehabilitation der
Bewegungsfunktionen von querschnittsgelähmten Patienten benutzt wird. Die
Therapieeinrichtung, bei der HAL zum Einsatz kommt ist in Deutschland, in Bochum.
Seit ihrer Gründung 2013 haben hier bisher 75 Patienten ein dreimonatiges Training
durchlaufen.
Gianna, die eine Rückenmarksverletzung bei einem Sturz vom Pferd davontrug, gehört
dazu. Sie konnte ihren Bewegungsapparat durch die Therapie soweit rehabilitieren,
dass sie heute wieder in der Lage ist zu reiten. Die Aufnahmen mit Gianna sowohl im
Therapiezentrum beim Training, wie auch beim Reiten belegen den Erfolg der
Therapie. In der Sendung wird ebenfalls eine 18jährige Patientin begleitet, die seit
Ende August 2016 an der 3 monatigen Therapie teilnimmt.
Durch solche Projekte, die stellvertretend sind für Medizintechnik aus Japan, wird die
Präfektur Fukushima vorgestellt und den Zuschauern in einem neuen noch
unbekannten Kontext näher gebracht. Dass sie sich soweit entwickeln konnte, und
somit weltweit Beachtung findet liegt nicht nur an der staatlichen Unterstützung,
sondern an den hohen technologischen Potentialen, die die regionalen Unternehmen
hier bereits als Zulieferer der Automobilindustrie entwickelt haben. Sie waren gefordert,
zu möglichst niedrigen Kosten Produkte höchster Qualität herzustellen. Auch
Medizintechnische Geräte benötigen höchste Qualität und Präzision, müssen sicher
und verlässlich sein. Die Unternehmen von Fukushima, die als Zulieferer der
Automobilindustrie gestählt wurden und viel Erfahrung haben, bringen in diesem
Bereich ihre Stärken ein.
In der Sendung werden noch weitere medizintechnische Geräte aus Fukushima
vorgestellt, deren originäre Technik weltweit führend ist. Die Sendung beschreibt die
Energie der Klein- und Mittelständischen Unternehmen aus Fukushima, die zum
Wiederaufbau nach dem KKW-Unfall beitragen, und die Kooperation mit Deutschland
anhand der Menschen, die hier beteiligt sind .

Ijika is a town where the “wisdom of life” and the “awe of nature” that ought to be held in Japanese people’s hearts still remain. We have covered this town closely for a year and a half.

Episode 1. YASA YASA - From the Ijika sea, winter –
Ijika-cho, Toba, Mie prefecture, is a town of female divers and fishermen making a living from the harvest of the sea. Due to depopulation and the aging of society, rituals which have been passed from generation to generation are dying. “What should we change and what should remain unchanged”…those are the questions on the minds of the people who conduct the town events and the female divers who face the sea with only their flesh and blood. We witnessed their worries and struggles with how it would turn out.

Episode 2. YASA YASA - Ijika and female divers -
Ijika-cho, Toba, Mie prefecture, is a town of female divers and fishermen. Two young women came to this small town with a population of less than 500 from big cities to become female divers. “Accepting women from big cities to become female divers is unprecedented.” Will those 2 young women be accepted by Ijika’s experienced female divers? This is a documentary program that closely follows their experiences from their audition to their first fishing outing.

Episode 3. YASA YASA - From the Ijika sea -
People have been living with the blessings of a bountiful sea for generations keeping gratitude in mind toward a Japanese sea god. But the town is surely changing due to depopulation and the aging of society.Shinto rituals and regional culture are disappearing one after another…In the midst of circumstance, Ijika people accepted city-born-city-bred young women as successor to aging female divers. How fishermen, female divers and the town are going to be changed? We witnessed their worries and struggles with how it would turn out for 1 year.

In 2003, Hiroki Gomi, a photojournalist for the Mainichi Newspaper, was on his way back from covering the Iraq War when a metal fragment in his bag exploded, killing one and injuring five. The fragment was a cluster bomblet. Gomi was punitively dismissed from his job.
I (the director) used to work for Mainichi Newspaper. Gomi and I joined the company at the same time and became good friends. Later, I changed jobs to join the television industry. I first began filming Gomi six years ago, and all the while, I struggled with two big questions: why was I filming my friend and what was the meaning of airing his past offenses again?
The production staff and I discussed these issues many times. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, however, people began to criticize the media for filtering the news. But why did Gomi's photos still strike a chord? When he snapped a shot, was he not filtering information? It seems that what causes distrust is how the media applies its filter. So, is the filter we use fair?
Four years after we started filming, the theme for this program finally came to us: we would ponder the state of post-disaster media through the lens of Gomi's photos. Finally, in June 2013, we produced a 74-minute version of this program.
After Gomi watched the program, something changed: he decided to pick up his camera and go back to work. This spring, he sent me a positive message, so I decided to re-make the program.
As humans, we all try to atone for our offenses, so with this in mind, I added scenes to show how far Gomi had come after 10 years.


2003年、毎日新聞のカメラマン・五味宏基がイラク戦争取材から日本に帰る帰途。持っていた金属片が爆発、6人が死傷した。金属片は、クラスター爆弾の子爆弾だった。五味は懲戒解雇された。
ディレクターの私は、前職の毎日新聞社に同期で入社、五味とは親しい友人だった。放送に転職後、取材を始めたのは6年前のことだ。その後、繰り返し悩んだ。「私はなぜ友を撮るのか？」「過去の罪を今さら世に出す意味はあるのか？」。
番組スタッフ間で議論を重ねた。日本では東日本大震災後、マスメディアの報道に対して「フィルターがかかっている」との批判が強まっている。だがなぜ、五味の写真は心を打つのだろう。シャッターを押す瞬間、五味は自分のフィルターをかけているのではないか。メディアは、その「フィルターのあり方」にこそ不信感を持たれているのではないか？　私たちのフィルターは、果たして公正か？
取材開始から４年が経ち、私たちがたどり着いたのは、「五味の写真を通して、震災後の視点でメディアのあり方を考える」という視点だった。こうして、2013年6月に、約80分のバージョンを制作した。
この番組を見た五味は、変化を起こしてきた。「もう一度、カメラを手にとって、仕事をしてみよう」という気持ちになってきたのだ。今年春、五味から届いた前向きなメッセージを読み、もう一度「シャッター」を作り直してみたいと思った。
人は、どうしたらその罪を償えるのだろう？　10年の放浪の果てに、彼がたどりついた地平を盛り込み、リメークした。


一位新聞報導攝影師，在伊拉克戰中進行戰地採訪時，因為特赦保護而遭到解雇。心灰意冷之際，他離開了新聞攝影報導這份工作。但是，十年後，他決定要重返攝影界。這空白的十年，究竟發生了什麼事情讓他改變了自己的想法？

Takeshi Akiyama, owner&chef,grew up in the TSUBAME-SANJO area in Niigata. He proud of his hometown and this is reflected in his choice of locally sourced ingredients, as well as quality tableware also manufactured in TSUBAME-SANJO.
He hopes success in TOKYO helps to promote the many special quolity of Niigata resulting in an increase of visitors to the region.

At the age of seven, Sakubei Yamamoto entered a coal mine with his parents; this was the beginning of his 50 year career at the Chikuho mines in Fukuoka prefecture. The mines were pitch black and humid, and the threat of collapse or flooding was never far from the miner’s minds.
After retiring, Sakubei found work as a night guard. From the age of 66, he first began documenting his life and times working at the coal mines in essays and paintings. He left behind a legacy of over a thousand paintings, as well as 70 notebooks and diaries. Of this collection, 697 pieces were chosen for inscription on the ‘Memory of the World’ register. This program examines the life of Sakubei, and the incredibly detailed documents he left behind of the Chikuhocoal mines. What sort of figure was he, and what message does he convey to us through his artwork? Sakubei’s life and art is revealed through the stories told by those connected to him.

日本一だった石炭生産地、福岡県・筑豊に生まれた作兵衛（1892-1984）は、およそ50年間炭坑夫として働き、その記憶を1000枚以上の絵に残しました。
暑く暗い地の底で石炭を掘る男と女の姿、道具、共同風呂やこどもたちの遊び、縁起や迷信。作兵衛が描いたのは、炭鉱で働く人たちとその家族が暮らす共同社会のすべてです。
ユネスコ（国連教育科学文化機関）は2011年、作兵衛の絵と日記など697点を「世界記憶遺産(※1)」に登録しました。日本での登録第１号です。日本でもまだ北海道釧路で、海底のさらに下から石炭を掘り出しています。
そしてほとんどを輸入に頼っていますが、日本の電気エネルギーの四分の一は石炭による火力発電が担っています。 国民一人あたりにすると、1年間に１トン以上の石炭を今も使っているのです。
番組では、かつて炭鉱で働いていた女性たちの証言、釧路やベトナムの炭鉱の迫力ある採掘現場の映像もまじえ、なぜ名もない山本作兵衛の絵が世界に認められたのか、また作兵衛は未来に何を伝えたかったのかを解き明かしていきます。


在七歲的時候，山本作兵衛在七歲的時候就與他的父母一起進入礦坑，這是他50年礦工生涯的開端。礦坑的生活十分黑暗與潮濕，擔心崩塌的恐懼一直存於礦工的心中。山本作兵衛結束礦工的工作後，繼續工作，擔任夜間的警衛。直到66歲時，他才開始使用煤炭來作畫。作兵衛的一生創作了近千幅的煤炭畫作，其中的667幅畫作會在節目中播放。除此之外，節目中還會介紹山本作兵衛的生平事蹟，以及他在筑豐碳坑的生活。透過本節目，觀眾將能瞭解碳坑畫師－山本作兵衛畫作中的故事。

After World War 2, Japan experienced an economic boom, and became a wealthy society. One couple fought against the materialism, choosing otherwise to live deep in the mountains without electricity, a telephone, or plumbing. They are Torao Tanaka (Aged 77) and his wife Fusako(72). Soon after Torao returned home from the battlefields of World War 2, he and his wife bought a mountain near their home village. Together, they cultivated the rugged terrain in order to live their lives there. Torao proclaims, “We want to plant and raise enough rice and vegetables for ourselves.” They became self sufficient. Even when Torao became serious ill, he persevered and they continued to live the mountain life. The mountain’s emotional importance far outweighed the effects of aging. Passing away, Torao’s daughters reflected on him and his wife’s lives: “We learned from them how to live good life for ourselves.” “We also want to live as our parents did.” With this, Torao and Fusako’s daughters look up to their parents as a model of how we should live.
