200-year Old Tortoise -- Giant Tortoise, Galapagos
Think of the Galapagos Islands and the giant elephant tortoises come to mind. Weighing up to 200 kilograms and living up to an estimated 200 years of age, they have managed to evolve in different ways to adapt to their environment. However, of the 11 species of elephant tortoises, one species is near extinction, with only one of its kind left in the world. That giant tortoise was discovered at the beginning of the 1970s, and Lonesome George, as he is dubbed, is estimated to be about 100 years old. Carefully protecting him, scientists have been trying to get George to leave behind his genes, but so far they have been unsuccessful.
