Cannes, October 15, 2025 – NHK is proud to announce its continued collaboration with ZDF Studios for the co-production of the third installment of the internationally acclaimed science documentary series, The Body.

Since its debut in 2017, The Body has captivated global audiences with its profound exploration of the human organism. The first series unveiled the intricate, self-sustaining information network within our bodies, while the second, released in 2019, delved into the enigmatic world of genes that shape our identity. Now, the latest chapter embarks on an ambitious scientific journey to confront one of humanity’s most fundamental questions: What is Life?

"What is life?" This age-old question now meets the advances of life sciences. The brand-new series is the ultimate sequel to 2019's The Body. It explores the "mystery of life" from three perspectives.

The first episode examines "the life of cells." Within these basic life units lie a dazzling wonderland—far more vibrant and chaotic world, unlike textbook descriptions. This episode dives deep into the breathtaking mystery of how lifeless matter can spark into living magic.

The second episode, "Human Life," shows how our 40 trillion cells, each one a miracle in motion, create intelligence and abilities. But with that gift came a heavy burden: the inevitability of aging. What secrets do life and aging conceal?

And the third episode, "The Life of All Things," explores how all life on Earth originated from a single common ancestor born nearly 4 billion years ago. This episode takes you on a sweeping journey through time, chasing the origin of life itself. Life is often called a miracle...but the latest research reveals something far beyond that. What we've discovered defies imagination—it's not just a miracle. It's something greater!

Hiroyuki Shirakawa, NHK’s Executive Producer of the series, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “It is a great honor to present the latest chapter of The Body series to the global audience through our creative partnership with ZDF Studios. The new installment, The Body: What Is Life?, is an ambitious production that takes on an unprecedented challenge: visualizing the ultra-microscopic world inside cells using high-definition CGI—something no one has ever seen before. This is not merely a scientific documentary; it is also a philosophical journey that explores the very essence of life.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful co-producers at ZDF Studios for embracing the significance of this meaningful endeavor. The immersive experience of entering this hidden microcosm will offer viewers a fresh perspective on what life truly means. We are truly delighted to bring this thought-provoking series to audiences around the world.”
