Nature is rich in blessings but can also be harmful to human life. People across Japan have been resilient, learning their lessons and passing them on for generations. Their countless efforts to cope with the harsh environment eventually created a world of bounty -- a world that's sustained by a delicate balance between diverse plants and creatures. Satoyama is a living history of humans, animals and the natural environment that have survived together for centuries. This 8K documentary series captures the supreme beauty of the Japanese countryside -- a place where gentle slopes left by landslides have been carved into rice terraces, where meltwater from heavy snow is used to nurture colorful carp, and where lush grasslands have been created on volcanic ash. And it shows how people can rediscover traditional, sustainable agriculture and benefit from the unique satoyama ecosystem.
An international co-production between NHK and ARTE. Available in 8K/4K/HD.

“Koi-Baka” -from Aichi to the world-
コイバカ ~愛知から世界へ~
Narita Koi Farms raises and sells Nishikigoi (carp), or so-called the “swimming jewel”, in Komaki-shi, Aichi Prefecture. Narita Koi Farms is a small company with only seven employees, but has a unique and major characteristic. That is, they "polish" the carp. They purchase young carp from farms in Hiroshima and Niigata, and raise them to become beautiful fishes. The two "Koi-Baka", or “carp freaks”, are the ones behind this effort. One of them is Mr. Narita, the president and the one in charge of purchasing and sales. The other one, Mr. Yamamoto, is the managing director and Narita’s right-hand man, who is in charge of the "polishing" work. The competitive exhibition is where people compete the beauty of their carp. Nishikigoi was born in Japan, and therefore the exhibition is known for its strict and high standards.
Narita Koi Farm has long been the high-ranking winner at the competition. Enthusiasts around the world come to Japan to seek for the support of Mr. Narita. Most of Narita’s clients are the “rich” from countries such as China, Southeast Asia, and Belgium. Clients include an owner of a carp worth about 20 million yen. They all want the world's best title. They would leave their carp with Narita and aim for victory at the competition. Obviously, winning is not easy. The "polishing" of carp is a steady and dull work. Controlling the water quality and taking proper care of the feed. They continue and repeat such work for years, to raise the carp beautifully. A Belgian enthusiast we visited for an interview, had dozens of carp at home. In the house they had a septic tank, and a specialized “carp-doctor” took care of their fishes’ health.
The company's sales have increased significantly, as they serviced the wealthy class. On the other hand, Narita hopes to let more Japan ese people familiarize with and enjoy raising carp. “Nishikigoi are loved by people from over 30 countries around the world. I want to make them loved even more,” he speaks of his dreams.

The South Island of New Zealand, known as a penguin paradise, is home to the largest number of penguin species. In fact, the island is believed to be where the very first penguins appeared. Little penguins, which at night slightly lean forward when walking back and forth between their nest and the sea, share features associated with early penguins, and forest-dwelling Fiordland crested penguins are believed to have gradually learned to breed in caves to avoid predators. This episode takes a look at the penguins' lives and reveals the secrets of how the island turned from being their birthplace to becoming their paradise.

The Ninja Birds of Kakadu: Comb-crested Jacanas
Kakadu National Park is located in the northernmost part of Australia. During the rainy season, when vast expanses of wetland appear and many aquatic insects and fish emerge, aquatic birds arrive to feed on them and breed. Among them is the Comb-crested Jacana. These unique birds use their long toes to gracefully walk across lotus leaves and catch underwater prey. Interestingly, these birds are polyandrous, meaning the females mate with more than one male. Females therefore lay a lot of clutches and it is the males alone who care for them. This episode, filmed between the rainy season and dry season when the park undergoes drastic changes, follows the lives of these aquatic birds.

东福寺 红妆璀璨
Tofukuji Temple, the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, was built in 1236.
At the main entrance is Sanmon Gate, designated a National Treasure. It is the largest one of its kind among Zen temples of Japan. The site is imbued with the solemnity of Buddhism. Nineteen statues of the Buddha grace the hall and the ceiling is adorned with the Kalavinka and Gumyo Bird, mythical creatures said to dwell in Buddhist paradise. The nearly 2000 maples trees along the temple grounds attest to the beauty of nature with its fresh green foliage in spring that eventually burst into the resplendent colors of fall. Three wooden bridges, Tsutenkyo, Gaunkyo, Engetsukyo span a stream surrounded by maple trees.
In all four directions of the Hojo or abbot’s quarters, the beautifully kept modern gardens convey expressions of contemporary art. Named collectively as Hasso-no-niwa (Garden of Eight Views), it was designed by Mirei Shigemori, the quintessential gardener of the Showa Era. In creating this garden, stones were brought from another location, in keeping with the Zen spirit of not letting anything go to waste. In autumn, the temple is dyed in the radiant hues of autumn. We are proud to present the breathtaking beauty of Tofukuji Temple in 4K super high-definition, the only way to do justice to the magical changing of the seasons woven by man and nature.

During summer, the Atlantic coast between northeastern United States and southeastern Canada attracts large sea creatures such as whales, sharks that feed on the dense aggregations of plankton. To help reveal the secrets of these creatures' underwater hunting and behavior, the documentary film crew attached special cameras to 13-meter-long basking sharks and to leatherback sea turtles, which as the world's largest reptile can grow to weigh over one ton. This episode takes a look at the shadowy lives of these giant creatures as the North American waters change from spring to summer.
