TBS Television Co., Ltd. (Tokyo; President: Masamine Ryuuho; hereafter “TBS”) ,U-NEXT and THE SEVEN have announced a large-scale project: the “TBS × U-NEXT × THE SEVEN Global Project." This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem" which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok"). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shieikan will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga.
It has also been announced that Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists.

This "Japanese sword-action entertainment" will portray how Toshizo Hijikata, upon encountering the greatness of Isami Kondo, went on to build the legendary Shinsengumi together with comrades of powerful individuality such as Soji Okita and Hajime Saito. The story depicts not only how they lived, but also how their life came to an end̶where friendships, betrayals, and convictions intertwine̶ as these men questioned the meaning of their own existence during a period of historical change, living briefly but brilliantly, driven by fierce determination so intense they were willing to stake their very lives, will be depicted with modern, alluring, and attractive character designs, also featuring high-speed sword fighting (“tate”) that has been praised as the fastest in history.

The cast has also been expanded with the addition of Eita Okuno, Mitsuomi Takahashi, Nobuaki Kaneko, Masanobu Ando, and Yuki Sakurai! They will portray a group of distinctive and dynamic characters who confront Toshizo Hijikata and the members of the Shieikan, driving the story forward in powerful ways.

Within the Mibu Roshigumi, the “Serizawa Faction,” led by Kamo Serizawa, emerges as the greatest enemy of Hijikata and the Kondo faction.
At the center of this faction is Nishiki Niimi, Serizawaʼs confidant, who will stop at nothing̶including cunning and ruthless tactics̶to dominate the factional struggles. Eita Okuno, a masterful actor who fully embodies the dangerous aura and loneliness of a man who lives in the "shadows" of society, takes on this role. Standing alongside Serizawa as his longtime right-hand man, Goro Hirayama is a powerful and brutish figure, portrayed by Mitsuomi Takahashi, known for his high-energy performances who has supported countless hit dramas with his commanding presence. Tadasaburo Sasaki, an elite swordsman from the Kobusho training institute known as “Japanʼs Best with a short sword,” serving as the Mibu Roshigumiʼs supervisor will be played by Nobuaki Kaneko, a multi-talented actor and musician with a unique charisma and allure.
Furthermore, Masanobu Ando takes on the role of Shinbei Tanaka, the notorious "Hitokiri Shinbei" (Shinbei the assassin) of the Bakumatsu Edo period, a Satsuma samurai who clashes with the Shinsengumi as part of the fearsome “Aizu Hunt.” Andoʼs distinct presence and acting skills bring depth to roles, ranging from the dangerously mad to the quietly delicate.
The enigmatic geisha Oume̶mysterious, beautiful, and strong̶who constantly sits beside Serizawa Kamo, will be played by Yuki Sakurai, an actress who combines delicacy and passion within her cool beauty, giving the character deep allure.
These five highly-skilled and accomplished actors will portray the characters who will color and dramatically shift the story. A character movie offering a glimpse into how they will play these "villains" with their intense personalities has been released on the official social media accounts and the TBS official YouTube channel.
